Tata Institute of Fundamental Research was conceived and founded by the distinguished Indian Scientist Dr. Homi Bhabha in June 1945 with the active support of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Government of Bombay Presidency. In 1962, the Institute shifted to its present picturesque campus at Colaba on the shores of the Arabian Sea.
Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) conducts annual summer programmes in which talented students are introduced to research activities in the areas of Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Physics.
The selected students are expected to work on a research project under the supervision of a TIFR researcher.
The programmes are held both at the Mumbai campus of the TIFR as well as at the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA), Pune during mid May to early July each year.

TIFR pursues basic research primarily in Astronomical, Biological, Chemical and Physical Sciences, Mathematics, Theoretical Computer Science and Systems Science (including Communications & Applied Probability) and runs a graduate program leading to a Ph.D. in all these areas.
We encourage applications from motivated students who have completed at least two years of undergraduate coursework in science and engineering fields.
At TIFR, research is carried out in frontline areas of all the fundamental sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics, as well as in the field of Science Education. TIFR Scientists are world leaders in several fields and their published contributions to scientific knowledge are internationally recognised. Over the years, the Institute has developed many new areas of research as well as training programmes.
The faculty at TIFR is subdivided into three Schools: The School of Mathematics, The School of Natural Sciences and The School of Technology & Computer Science. TIFR has three National Centres: the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), Bangalore, the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA), Pune and the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), Mankhurd, Mumbai. The School of Mathematics has a Centre for Applicable Mathematics (CAM) at Bangalore, focusing on applicable mathematics.
In addition, the TIFR Centre for Interdisciplinary Sciences (TCIS) has started at the second campus of TIFR on a 200 acre plot at Hyderabad. TIFR's International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS) at Bangalore was started in 2007. It is conceived to contribute to the growth of excellence in basic sciences, through conferences, interactions and cross-fertilization between disciplines.
In May 2002, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research was accorded Deemed University status by the University Grants Commission. Since then TIFR has started awarding its own Degrees. TIFR has also been accredited with an `A+' Grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) on 2nd December, 2016.

GATE score based applications in Systems Science (including Communications and Applied Probability):
Engineering students with exceptional performance in GATE examination of 2018-2020 in Electrical, Electronics and Communications Engineering, Mathematics may apply for the Ph.D. program without appearing for the TIFR Entrance Test. The link for GATE score based applications will be made available on our website on February 5, 2020.
Last date for applying will be two weeks after the GATE 2020 results are displayed on their website.
In case a student takes the Systems Science TIFR Entrance Test and also submits a GATE score based application, the better of the two performances will be considered.
GATE/ JEST/ NET exam scores for Physics, Biology and Chemistry:
In addition to the admissions through the nationwide examination in December, some admissions in Physics, Biology and Chemistry based on GATE / NET / JEST scores in the relevant subjects, and Ecology and Evolution GATE scores (NCBS only), are also possible. Details of these admission procedures, including cutoffs and application dates, will be available on the websites of TIFR‐Mumbai, NCRA‐Pune, NCBS‐Bengaluru, ICTS‐Bengaluru and TIFR‐Hyderabad, as appropriate and at appropriate times.
